You don’t need to convince an Estonian that the sauna is good for you. But does a sauna straight after a workout actually add anything, or is it simply a pleasant way to unwind? Finnish researchers looked into exactly that – and the answer is yes, it does. More than you might expect.

What the study found
Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä ran the first randomised controlled trial – the gold standard of scientific research – ever carried out in sauna research. Earlier sauna studies were observational: they show an association, but not a cause. This time 47 participants were randomly divided into three groups:
- exercise + 15 minutes of sauna immediately after the workout
- exercise only
- a control group that did neither
The trial ran for eight weeks. The training was identical for everyone: 50 minutes three times a week, of which 20 minutes were strength exercises and 30 minutes aerobic work. The only difference between the two training groups was the sauna.
By the end of the eight weeks, the “exercise + sauna” group was ahead of the exercise-only group in three important measures:
- Cardiovascular fitness improved more (oxygen uptake capacity rose by an average of 2.7 ml/kg/min more)
- Systolic blood pressure – the upper number – fell by an average of 8 mmHg
- Total cholesterol was lower
The drop in blood pressure is the most remarkable part. 8 mmHg is the kind of change usually expected from medication or a long-term lifestyle overhaul – not from 15 minutes in the sauna after a workout.
One important detail: the participants were middle-aged (49 on average), physically inactive people with at least one cardiovascular risk factor. In other words, the greatest benefit went to those starting from a lower baseline – not to elite athletes. The study’s authors specifically noted that the sauna may be especially useful for people with lower exercise tolerance.

Why a sauna after exercise works
In the sauna your core body temperature rises from roughly 37 to 39 degrees. The body responds to this much as it would to physical effort:
- blood vessels widen to carry heat away
- heart rate rises, similar to light or moderate activity
- circulation speeds up and the body begins to sweat
- after the sauna blood pressure drops, because the widened vessels stay open for a while
The sauna loads the heart and blood vessels, but not the muscles you have just used in training. That is exactly why it suits the post-workout moment: your skeletal muscles are already tired and can rest, while the sauna keeps the heart and circulation working a little longer. The body receives a longer, stronger signal to adapt to – and over time blood vessels become more elastic and the heart works more efficiently.
The second key point is regularity. In the trial, participants used the sauna three times a week for eight weeks straight. The result came from consistency, not from a single sauna session.
The sauna and your heart in the long run
This study is not the only one. A long-term study at the University of Eastern Finland followed more than 2,000 men for nearly 20 years. Those who used the sauna 4–7 times a week died of cardiovascular disease markedly less often than those who used the sauna once a week. That was an observational study and does not prove causation, but it points in the same direction that the new Jyväskylä trial has now confirmed under controlled conditions.
Which type of sauna is best?
The trial used an ordinary Finnish sauna. Other sauna types work slightly differently:
- A traditional electric or wood-heated sauna – high temperature, dry air, with humidity added by throwing water on the stones. This is what the study used.
- A steam room – lower temperature but high humidity, which often feels more intense.
- An infrared sauna – heats the body directly rather than the air. The temperature is lower, so it is gentler on the heart, but the effect is likely smaller than with a classic sauna.
If your goal is the benefit seen in the study, an ordinary hot sauna is the closest match to what the researchers tested.
How to put this into practice
The study’s recipe is simple and easy to copy at home:
- Move regularly. In the trial that meant 50 minutes three times a week, but the principle holds for any regular exercise.
- Take the sauna after your workout, not before. The benefit appeared specifically after training. Beforehand, a sauna drains the energy and fluid you need for the session itself.
- About 15 minutes is enough. Longer does not mean better – the body gets the signal in less time.
- Drink water. Exercise and sauna together take a lot of fluid. Drink before, during and after.
- Make it a regular habit. Three times a week for eight weeks produced a measurable result. One sauna a month will not.
What the sauna does not do
Since there is a lot of talk about saunas, a few myths are worth clearing up:
- The sauna does not burn fat. The weight you lose in the sauna is water, and it comes back as soon as you drink.
- The sauna does not “flush toxins” out of the body. That job belongs to the liver and kidneys; sweat is mostly water and salts. We wrote about this at length in our detox article.
- The sauna does not replace exercise. The study showed the benefit specifically in combination – sauna alone did less than exercise alone.
The sauna looks after your heart, not your muscles
You often step out of the sauna feeling as though your whole body has let go. That feeling is genuine, but short-lived: heat widens blood vessels and eases muscle tension for a few hours, without changing whatever is causing the tension. If your shoulders are stiff from sitting at a computer all day, or your thighs are over-toned after a hard run, those problems will still be there the next morning – the sauna does not reach deep enough into the tissue to affect them.
Persistent tension needs targeted work:
- Stretching maintains muscle length and mobility, but does not undo knots that have already formed.
- Foam rolling helps with the surface layers and fascia, but does not reach the deeper muscle layers.
- Massage works directly on the tense tissue: pressure and movement stimulate circulation within the muscle, relax contracted fibres and signal to the nervous system that the muscle can let go. Unlike heat, massage reaches exactly where the tension is, not just under the skin.

So the sauna and massage do different jobs. The sauna keeps your heart and circulation in shape; your muscles need looking after separately – and neither one replaces the other.
When to be careful
The sauna is safe for most people, but a few things are worth keeping in mind:
- don’t go to the sauna when you are ill, running a fever, or after drinking alcohol
- get up from the bench and from lying down slowly – blood pressure is lower after a sauna and you may feel light-headed
- if you have heart or blood pressure problems, are pregnant, or take medication regularly, check with your doctor first
- if you feel dizzy, nauseous or notice your heart pounding, step out – this is not a place to tough it out
In summary
A sauna after a workout is not just a pleasant ritual. Done regularly, it supports the heart, lowers blood pressure and improves fitness – especially for those who are only just getting started with exercise. A simple habit that Estonians have anyway – and now there is scientific backing behind it.
